Snake Removal in Tuscaloosa
Most snakes found around Tuscaloosa homes are harmless and beneficial. A few are not, and the difference matters.
The Black Warrior River runs through the city and the wooded corridors along it are good snake habitat with a permanent rodent supply. Most of what turns up around houses is harmless. The identification still matters, and the honest answer for a snake in a crawlspace is usually that something else got in first.
Snakes in Tuscaloosa County: who does what
Alabama’s wildlife division does not remove nuisance wildlife from private property unless public safety is at risk. It permits Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators to do it instead, and the state’s own wording is that they do so at the landowner’s or tenant’s expense. In a city where a very large share of the housing is rented, that last phrase is not academic; it is the argument that delays the job while the animal keeps chewing, so settle who is paying early.
For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the Alabama Cooperative Extension, Tuscaloosa County office is at 1800 McFarland Blvd E #342, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404, (205) 349-4630 (office page).
What Alabama law says about snakes
Alabama protects several snakes under regulation 220-2-.92, including all native kingsnakes, the eastern indigo, eastern coral, pine snakes, the rainbow snake and the southern hognose; none may be killed without a permit. A live eastern diamondback may be relocated only within its county of capture, the same day, with the landowner’s permission. All Alabama rules →

Signs, and why they matter
- A shed skin in a crawlspace, garage or shed
- A snake seen in the garage, laundry, crawlspace or under a step
- Rodent activity that suddenly stops: snakes follow their food
- Venomous species do occur in this region and misidentification is common in both directions
- Any suspected venomous bite is an emergency: call 911, do not attempt to catch the snake
How removal works
Identification first, then physical removal with proper hooks and tubes. Longer term the answer is habitat and rodent control; a house with no mice is far less interesting to a snake.
Snake questions
How much does snake removal cost in Tuscaloosa?
$150 – $400 for removal of a single snake, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).
Is there a wrong time of year to deal with snakes?
Peak activity in spring and autumn, plus hot spells when snakes move into cool crawlspaces and garages.
