Bat Removal in Tuscaloosa
Bats are the most legally constrained animal in this trade. Getting the timing wrong is not just inhumane, it is often illegal.
Older masonry buildings around the university and the historic parts of town are exactly what a colony wants, and Alabama’s maternity restrictions apply to all of them. The practical problem in a rental city is that bats are quiet and undramatic until the numbers build, so a roost can go several tenancies before anyone escalates it, and by then it is guano remediation as well as exclusion.
Bats in Tuscaloosa County: who does what
Alabama’s wildlife division does not remove nuisance wildlife from private property unless public safety is at risk. It permits Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators to do it instead, and the state’s own wording is that they do so at the landowner’s or tenant’s expense. In a city where a very large share of the housing is rented, that last phrase is not academic; it is the argument that delays the job while the animal keeps chewing, so settle who is paying early.
For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the Alabama Cooperative Extension, Tuscaloosa County office is at 1800 McFarland Blvd E #342, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404, (205) 349-4630 (office page).
What Alabama law says about bats
Alabama regulation 220-2-.92 protects ten bat species, among them the Brazilian free-tailed, gray, Indiana, little brown, northern long-eared, Rafinesque’s big-eared, southeastern and tricolored bats, and taking one needs a permit from the Commissioner. All Alabama rules →
Exclusion avoided during maternity season: reported as roughly May – July

Signs, and why they matter
- Bats seen leaving the roofline, a gable end or a chimney around sunset
- Squeaking or rustling from a wall cavity or attic, worst on hot evenings
- A sharp ammonia smell: accumulated guano and urine
- Rabies: any direct contact, or a bat found in a room where someone was asleep, needs a call to your health department
- Histoplasmosis, a lung infection from fungal spores in accumulated guano
How removal works
Bats are never trapped or killed. A licensed operator fits one-way valves at the active exits so bats can leave but cannot re-enter, seals every other gap first, then removes the valves once the roost is empty. Guano removal and attic decontamination usually follow.
Bat questions
How much does bat removal cost in Tuscaloosa?
$400 – $600 small colony · $500 – $1,200 typical · $5,000 – $8,500 for a large colony, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).
Is there a wrong time of year to deal with bats?
Exclusion is restricted during maternity season, when pups cannot yet fly. Sealing a roost then traps them inside to die. The dates differ by state: see the Alabama law page.
